AirTag “notify when found” alerts to old location

I have put AirTags on some items and been trying to figure out how to use them properly.

it seems that if I mark a tag as lost, or select notify when found, it alerts almost immediately that it has been found, but not since I hit the alert, the old 4 hour old location is what it considers found.

so it shows me “AirTag was located near xyz some street” but when I open the find my app, it is the old location, not found since I selected notify me.

I would expect it to only notify me if it was found SINCE I SET IT TO LOST.

am I missing something here?
