When I try to import some video clips into imovie instead of the video I get large black bars striped across a yellow background. Any idea what’s causing this or or to change? The video clips are fine to watch in the photos app and appear fine in the side screen to import into imovie.

Try deleting/resetting preferences. To delete/reset preferences close iMovie and then reopen iMovie while holding
down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new empty library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Possibly you may need to reboot to set the
changes. Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.
