iPad (10th Gen) will not pair with my Apple Pencil (1st Gen)

Purchased an iPad (10th gen) 64Gb Wifi.

Have a 1st Gen Apple Pencil. The Pencil will not pair to the iPad.

Plug Pencil into iPad using a Usb-c to lightning cable with the lightning to lightning adapter that came with the pencil.

The iPad does not recognize or pair to the Pencil
