Recently AOL email stopped syncing between my 2020 MacBook Pro that I access via Firefox and my iPhone 13 Pro that I access via the mail app. All updates are up to date. For example, I would delete, read, mark as spam several emails but on the laptop it’s as if they were all unread.

Webmail/browser mail..why?
Did you try setting up you mail account using a mail client like the baked in Mail.app— not through a browser(?) and compare your results.
IMAP accounts syn between devices.
This makes sense, but I haven't tried that yet because until recently it did sync the way it is set up. On the laptop, I prefer to access the AOL account via the Firefox browser. This keeps it separate from my other email accounts which are set up with the baked-in Mail app. Perhaps it has something to do with a recent Firefox browser update?
