When I send text messages to my wife, the text box has a voice recording icon on the far right. Any other message has a microphone icon for voice dictation, which should be default. How do I change the text message string with my wife to use the mic dictation.

Me too. Apparently it's a bug. If you send someone an audio text, that person is stuck on audio. You have to then send them a voice to text message to get it to clear out.

I came here with the same problem, and just figured it out. Long tap the microphone icon that is in the very lower right corner of your phone’s screen. Opposite the smiley face. The audio icon in the text field will change back.
Update: all you have to do is tap the microphone button on and back off again and that resets it.
I still have one locked recipient on voice message and cannot get back to text. Any new fixes?
But how do we do that if the microphone icon isn’t there?
Same for me! Only one text chain has the audio recording instead of dictation! So frustrating when you use the dictation a lot!
