Are you using an iPhone? Make sure your Airpods are fully charged and your iPhone is updated to the current version. Hold the case close to your device and open them. The iPhone should instantly recognize the Airpods. Follow the prompts from here.

Not using an iPhone or Apple device? You will need to connect the Airpods via Bluetooth. First, make sure Bluetooth is turned on on your device. Go to add a Bluetooth connection on your device, this is usually found in "settings" on most devices. Next hold the airpods close to your phone and open the case. With the case open, hold the button on the back of the Airpods case for about 5 seconds. The Airpods should show up on your device, ready to connect.

If this does not work, try to connect a different bluetooth device to your iPhone X. Verify that the bluetooth function on the device works.

If you verified bluetooth on the iPhone does work, there may be something wrong with your Airpods. You may need to contact apple support, or the retailer that sold you the Airpods.
