I have been syncing iPad with my Mac Pro running Big Sur fine. Recently I connected with usb cable as usual and get a msg claiming I need to upgrade my Mac to sync, but my hardware will not support any newer OS. My iPad is on osx 17.1.2. How can I get them to talk again?

the update it wants to install is not a full MacOS update. This update ONLY updates the Mac-to-iOS device interface for your particular situation.
The entire update process typically completes in under two minutes, INCLUDING download time.
if you do not allow it to run, you will not have access to your iDevice(s).
Did you click the "Not Now" button?
Normally it should work but mine now doesn't work too.
