Message notifications not working

It has been a long time since I had Message notifications reliably. Messages seem to be the only alerts I don't get. This has been going on for more than a year. In that time I have received a new device and that new device has been updated to iOS17.

Symptoms

  • Message alerts appear randomly but usually not at all
  • Verification code Messages almost never alert

Settings

  • Settings > Notifications: Display as: Stack, Scheduled Summary is Off, Show Previews is Always, Siri options are off.
  • Settings > Notifications > Messages
    • Allow Notifications - ON
    • Always deliver immediately - ON for Critical Alerts and Time Sensitive Notifications.
    • Alerts - Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners are all checked, Banner style: Persistent
    • Lock screen appearance - Show Previews: Always, Notification Grouping: Automatic
    • Customize Notifications
      • Repeat Alerts: Once
      • Allow notifications: ON for Unknown Senders
      • Receive as critical alerts: Emergency Contact Alerts are ON
  • Messages > Contact > Hide Alerts is NOT on for someone whose Messages don't alert.

Troubleshooting

  • Turned off all notifications, rebooted, re-enabled, rebooted, and retried
  • Turned off only Message notifications, rebooted, re-enabled, rebooted, and retried
  • Received an entirely new device
  • Updated new device to iOS 17

So one possible theory (if you've exhausted all the usual channels of Do Not Disturb, checking volume / ring, turning on iCloud sync, etc.) is that it has to do with Apple's (newish? not sure when it came about) optimizations around push notifications. Basically, they try to push notifications only to the 'active' device. So if your phone is locked, it'll try to go somewhere else - iPad, Mac, watch, whichever might seem more 'active'. The problem is, if your device notification settings are different for apps or you're just overall not expecting this behavior change, this results in weird, seemingly 'missed' notifications.

If you want to test things out - try having another person or use a device that is not connected to your iCloud account to text you (e.g. Google voice on a work laptop). Close / turn off all your devices linked to your iCloud account (leave only the phone). Make sure you're also not wearing your Apple watch. See if that will push to your phone consistently.

It's what happened to me, at least. And I filed a feature request to Apple to please change it back as it's extremely confusing and inconvenient.

I've had this problem for a while. Started out as sometimes missing notifications but has turned into most of the time. Only happens when phone is locked. I tried all of the easy things that everyone suggests. I even reset my phone back to factory but nothing worked. Today, I turned off imessages and I get notifications now. I cannot explain it but it works. Messages are sent as SMS but that does not matter to me. The only problem I had was some people sent me messages and they appeared to be imessages (bubble was blue). Had them delete the old conversaion start a new one and it finally worked.

I also have this issue. I would get Notifications like you would see a blue moon. More times not receiving notifications like sound of outgoing or incoming mail CAN’T BE HEARD. The volume is up, as other apps work fine and sound is perfect, all except Apple App for emails doesn’t work for Notifications.

This is for a NEW iPad 10, only 2 days new. I also upgraded to 17.2, it didn’t do anything to fix Notifications.

Two Advisors tried to help yesterday. They checked all my settings. All my settings weren’t changed when I set up my new iPad by letting iCloud do the work for setting up my new iPad. The advisor had me delete mail app and reinstall it, that didn’t work. Kinda did, I got outgoing Notification working, but that’s about it for the iPad. The ironic thing is, ever since I activated my new iPad days ago, my iPhone has gone wonky too. It was working fine, the Notifications DON’T work on it either since the new iPad started up. ?????

I was told by the advisors, that this is a software issue, and I have to call back in a week to Apple Support to see if and when a fix is coming ?
