how do I download from the iCloud to my HD?
trying to retrieve all my files uploaded to the iCloud. I prefer saving on my HD and backing up to external drives. How do I retrieve my docs?

Anything in iCloud can be synced directly to your Mac.
System settings > Apple ID > icloud
Turn on iCloud Drive. Disable "optimize" if you wish all files to sync.
