The connecting wire is new, there is no dust in connection slot, the phone WILL charge when connected to my 11 year old desktop Mac computer as well as when I use a wall adaptor to charge it. The problem is not the phone. It appears that the phone and the macbook are not communicating. I am beginning to hate Apple!

i have plugged the cables into a different port and the phone still won’t charge on MacBook. Every time Apple updates their IOS there are always problems somewhere. Never had this problem till downloading the most current IOS. Thank you for your suggestions. I will just use my old desktop iMac. It’s always reliable.
Did you try with another cable? Did you buy an Apple cable or a reputable make?
Considering it happened after the IOS update, did you try to force restart your iPhone?
Yes I used a different cable. Both cables are Apple.
Did you try to plug into the same port of your Macbook something else to exclude a dirty port maybe?
