After Sonoma 14.1 Update, MS Office 2019 - MS Telling Me I Need MS 365

After the the Sonoma update on my computer, when I open MS Word, which I purchased with my iMac in 2019, is telling me "Action Required - We've detected a one-time purchase license. This license can only be used with Microsoft 365 apps dowloaded directly from Microsoft365.com". Well, I DID purchase the MS Office (NOT MS 365, as I don't want that!). I'm not going to pay for something I've already paid for. Surly there has got to be a work around for this? After the last big OS update, something similar happened, and it took forever to find the fix. I am hoping this is the same, it's just buried deeper. I've been searching for more than three hours and it just talks about MS365. That is not what I have and is not what I want/need. It is for plain MS Word. The latest version I have of that is 16.79.1. Is someone able to point me in the right direction? While I do not do work at home, I DO work with a non-profit and have a TON of documentation that I maintain and need to continue. Thank you for any help.

I don't believe that this has anything to do with your macOS Sonoma update. Instead, it is Microsoft that is driving this, as you can imagine, they are trying to get everyone on to their 365 subscription plan.

As such, you basically have three choices:

  1. Get onboard with Microsoft 365.
  2. Contact Microsoft Support directly to try to get this resolved.
  3. Switch to another Microsoft-compatible app suite, like LibreOffice, which, unlike Office, is free.

Update as of 12/12/23 - I have just returned from out of town and checked my apps and everything seems to be back to normal. I didn't download anything from the Microsoft website, it just all seems to have resolved on its own. I have done several tests, and everything works as it should. No more messages on the top of the documents I needed to work on, etc. It was VERY frustrating to have the problem to begin with, but I'm glad it has worked out. I hope all of you who have been having the same issue have had the same "luck" that I seem to have.
