Desktop files deleted

I inadvertently created a shortcut to the desktop on the desktop and deleted that. In the process, I lost all the data on my desktop. How can I recover it? I tried undo several times but that didn't work. It is also not in the trash.

Please help!!!!

If you deleted just the shortcut, there should be no data loss.

In Finder, press Command-Shift-D. What do you see? There should be a window showing the contents of your Desktop. If it is indeed empty, check first under iCloud Drive - so many users have activated "Documents and Desktop in iCloud" without realizing it.

If your data is not to be found in either of these places, then you must get it from a backup, just as muguy said.
