I can't install Sonoma on my MacBook Air

I was given this MacBook air, intel version 2018. It was setup to start up with new user. I set it up and used it with the Mojave OS. I went to software update, where it showed that it could be updated to macOS Sonoma. I attempted this update. It restarted into internet recovery mode. Command R does not work. Using internet recovery mode, I attempted to reinstall Mojave. It gets to 2 minutes remaining and reboots into internet recovery mode. I fear that at some point while attempting to install Mojave, that I may have erased the recovery partition. Now when attempting to use internet recovery, it gives the message that the startup disk needs an update. I does not update, it restarts into internet recovery yet again. Please help.

Reapply the Mojave OS...

1. Start up from macOS Recovery

Option-⌘-R

Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.

In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.

Run Disk First Aid.

APFS won't work for Sierra or earlier, Sierra or earlier needs MacOS Extended Journaled. High Sierra won't work for APFS on earlier Macs.

What has often worked for others is to use this Restore Method instead of CMD+r keys...

Shift-Option-⌘-R

Install the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

I've really fixed it good now. I made a bootable usb of catalina because its the latest macOS that my macbook pro will take. I got into internet recovery, attempted to install catalina, after failing to make it work via all of your suggestions as well as at least teen other methods suggested in the apple forums. Anyway, it acted as if it was going to install catalina, but it crashed, rebooted into internet recovery yet again. Now, it won't even go into internet recovery. It shows via the timer that after it gets to one minute, instead of booting up recovery, it reboots, into a black screen. I left it hoping that it would eventually reboot into the recovery mode. I turned it off and attempted at least fifteen times, but it just kept rebooting to the loading recovery screen and then to black screen.

I have checked my internet connection and I have a 50 meg download and 11 up. I checked the keyboard, and all keys work fine. They were all working a few days ago when I had macOS Mojave on it, before attempting to update to Sonoma. I don't know for sure, but I'm thinking that in the beginning, after sonoma failure, I may have erased the base system, which I believe also contains the recovery partition.
