How to use a different Apple ID for Media and Purchases?

I just got the Mac Studio. When setting up Apple ID, it seems it is no longer possible to use a different Apple ID for Media and Purchases from the Apple ID linked to the computer. My 2017 MacBook Pro with Sonoma, I am able to do this, as well on all my other devices.

How can I change the Apple ID used for Media and Purchases?

Thanks!

This doesn’t answer the question at all. Some of us have 2 Apple ids. Not illegal. Or maybe my wife wants to read her books on my device. Need to be able to sign in to media and purchases with a different Apple ID than syncs with iCloud, for example. All may other devices can do this. New MacBook Air won’t.

You can create an Apple ID on your Mac using your current email address, or have an iCloud email address generated for you.

In some countries and regions, you can use a phone number instead of an email address as your Apple ID. See the Apple Support article Use your mobile phone number as your Apple ID.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click “Sign in with your Apple ID” at the top of the sidebar.
  2. Click Don’t Have an Account? then follow the onscreen instructions.
  3. After you create an Apple ID and sign in, you can manage your Apple ID settings on your Mac. See Manage your Apple ID settings.

I had the same issues with 14.1 and 14.2 (only on a Mac Studio M1 Max, an M1 MacBook Air worked fine with 14.x) and the issue appears to have been resolved with the 14.2.1 update on the Studio. The problem I had was that neither of my two Apple IDs would work for Apple TV or Apple Music on the Studio, but the Apple Store ID worked fine for all software purchases and updates and the Apple Store ID worked fine for everything on the MacBook Air M1.

I don’t know if this will help. I also have two Apple IDs, from a long time ago. I do not have a brand new device, so this may not apply. I have one of them registered for iCloud, the other for purchases. It used to be possible to login to these as two separate things.

When I updated to the latest OS on my desktop, it wouldn’t accept that. I had to open the media account separately as a reboot on my desktop with the other account as being registered. I then entered the iCloud account into family sharing. Voila! That worked.

My phone still accepts two accounts. It is an iPhone 14. I don’t know if this will be true when I get a new iPhone. I expect that ultimately I will have to consolidate the two accounts. I think that will require calling Apple support, as login trickery is involved.

Hope this helps.
