Apple Configurator 2 Ver 2.16 ConfigurationUtilityKit.error 0x64

Hello,

I am trying to restore multiple iPads with a Cambrionix Thunderbolt hub. This has worked countless times before (school setting)

I place each device (11) into restore mode and then I select restore. After a few minutes of redownloading iPadOS and then unzipping it, it attempts to install and then halts.

The error I get is:

ConfigurationUtilityKit.error 0x64 (100)

I rebooted the iMac (8-Core Intel i7 running Sonoma 14.0)

I then attempted to only do one device, which completed successfully.

I then attempted to do two devices, which failed just like before.

I then updated to Apple Configurator Ver 2.17. It behaved exactly the same.

I can not for the life of me find any rhyme or reason to these error codes and wouldn't know where to look for more comprehensive documentation than everything Apple provides. I saw that there was no discussion about this so I thought I'd make a post to hopefully help others, or at very least, show that they aren't alone.

Factory reset of our Mac has not helped, neither trying another machine.

Further testing has revealed we can restore multiple (40) iPads as long as they're the same model.

Replace one of them with a different kind and we're back to erroring out.

Hope that helps someone googling for this.

For me, it ended up being 2 of the iPad themselves. There must have been somthing wrong with the device? I had gotten the error again after thinking that that may be the culprit and went through each of the batch I was wiping and removed ones that were still on the recovery screen while the others had completed. Those ones then wiped just fine so what this error really means is still up in the air but I just wanted to share what I had done.

I was able to replicate the same issue described in the original post on a coworker's M2 MacBook Pro. Completely different machine and different cables. Maybe it's a catch all USB error? I even checked GSX's documentation if it was written down anywhere.

It is not.

Because why would you write something like that down..
