Garageband sound continues after releasing the key. Midi monitor shows note off on my Mac

Mac Sonoma 14.1.1, Garageband 10.4.9, Nektar T4. Not the T4 as it works with other daws. Any note played has a long sustain. Apple senior advisor was no help. Hoping to not have to delete/reload GB. Problem exists with vsts also.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 14.1

As a follow up to this - I have contacted apple support and sent them a video showing this issue happening in practice (and how it makes recording any MIDI input completely impossible!)

I've also submitted a bug report here: Feedback - GarageBand - Apple

I would recommend that anyone else reading this and is having the same problem do this ASAP.

The more people who flag this the higher the likelihood of a bug fix being implemented.

MacBook Pro Ventura 13.5.2 (22G91)

Yamaha P-80 / Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 (3rd Gen)

I have exactly this issue and it's driving me nuts. I am using a Yamaha P 80 via a Roland audio/midi interface

This worked absolutely fine until the latest GarageBand update to 10.4.9

I have tested the MIDI signal through https://www.midimonitor.com/ and it's behaving exactly as you'd expect:

  • Sending a Note On at the right velocity when I press the key
  • Sending a Note On at 0 velocity when I release it

GarageBand is interpreting the Note On at 0 velocity when I release as Note On at 80 velocity - so I'm getting two notes - once on press and once at release - which then sustains indefinitely

I thought this was an issue my audio Roland Quad Capture - as it no longer has up to date drivers for Ventura - so bought a Scarlett 4i4 yesterday as a replacement (for over £100) but am getting exactly the same issue.

APPLE - THIS ISSUE NEEDS A BUG FIX URGENTLY - I cannot use my trusted (and expensive) digital piano to play VSTs any more - I have songs I want to work on, and do not want to need to invest in any more new hardware or software to do it.

@tmensa - If you are reading this... could you use https://www.midimonitor.com/ to test the signal from your old CME kontroller? I suspect when you release a key it is sending Note Off, rather than Note On at 0 Velocity - which might be why it works.

Both are valid ways to signal a key being released in the MIDI standard and GB should interpret them both fine
