Text editor always crashes on start up

Reboot your Mac. Press and hold the shift key while launching TextEdit. You should do this only following an application crash or hang. It will prevent TextEdit from loading its last saved execution state, and subsequently, it may work correctly. If not, there is another reason such as the type of document you are attempting to open, etc.
