I don’t know what libby is, but I assume it is an app. If the iPad is plugged in that might cause it to get warm; if not, contact the app developer and ask them to fix their app→How to contact an app developer - Apple Support
It looks like you're using a very old iPad model and iOS version. While the app page states that the app is still compatible with your device, it might be that it's struggling to handle the current version.
One way to tell is to see if the app is draining your iPad battery. To check on that, go to Settings > Battery, and under Battery Usage By App check to see how much Libby is using per day.
Hope you can get this resolved and get back to reading soon!
I am using iPhone 6 plus to read my books. My phone get heated pretty quickly and the battery drains fast. I check my battery usage and it shows as Libby using 81% of the battery, for using the app for 2.5. My iPhone 15 Pro is much more efficient. Reading books for 3.5 hours uses 25 % of battery.
