I can’t swipe up to get battery life, find my phone, etc. Hard reset doesn’t work.

With watchOS 10 (which comes with the series 9 watch) you now access Control Center by pressing the side button.

You're welcome. A lot of people have had the same problem. Note that swiping watch faces has changed also.
