Text message forwarding not working from iPhone to Mac

I have text message forwarding enabled on my iPhone, so that I can send and receive messages from the phone on my Mac. But sometime in the last month or two, this has stopped working. Both devices are running the latest iOS 17.1.1 and MacOS 14.1.1. I've toggled the "text message forwarding" setting repeatedly, and restarted each device more than once.

Also, there used to be an option for Messages on my Mac to start new conversations using my phone number, but I no longer see that -- only my Apple ID. I'm thinking this may be related.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

So here's the solution: It turns out that receiving iMessages to and sending replies from my phone number was disabled in Settings (on the iPhone). Don't know how it got disabled, and feel a little sheepish about not noticing sooner. When re-enabled, SMS messages are forwarded to the Mac as before. Go figure
