iPhone 13 Pro, IOS 17.1, is not allowed to connect with my iTunes 12.8.3.1 on a MAC Pro running 10.13.6 High Sierra

Since my iPhone 13 Pro (and iPad Air 5th Generation) were obediently updated to the las IOS versions, 17.1 & 17.0.3 every time I connect any of them to my Mac Pro there is a Prompt asking to perform a software update to connect with any of those devices. The bad part, if you click install the "update" the propmpt comes back indicating that the installation failed due to a Network problem. If you decide to click "not now" in the same prompt the prompt dissapears and the device you attempt to sync doesn't show up anymore. Regarding to the "Network Problem", I have a 1Gb Fiber connection that is certainly up and running at the moment the process attempts to run the update. I tried in different times and also bringing down all the network protections I have in place. For proper context I have to add that this machine and software versions have a reason. My digital assets are been processed using Aperture 3 for Photography and iTunes for all the other media. I process about 25000 photographies and purchased since iTunes was released around the same amount of music that I mix in different playlist with my own digitalized music having a total of 38000 music files. Unfortunately Apple decided to discontinue Aperture first and later on iTunes. I have another Mac running the last Sonoma version, I purchased that with the hope to migrate content but, guess what, in the new Mac Aperture doesn't run and iTunes doesn't exist... worse part, cannot even run my iTunes library in an external HD where I mirror my content just because each time I update a playlist in the old Mac and mirror the changes in the external drive the new Mac doesn't realize that there was a change and makes this totally worthless to waste time trying to sync again. I am sure that Apple has the right and responsability to update its products but cannot leave loyal Customers unable to keep working with the applications they feel comfortable with. Important is to mention that I carry an old iPad 5th Generation running 16.7 and this still sysnces with my iTunes Library. Unfortunately cannot roll back the IOS on my iPhone and iPad Air. I need a solution that will allow me to keep my new IOS devices in Sync with my digital assets.

The requirement for (very small) software update occurs OFTEN after connecting a phone to a Mac for the first time in that version of macOS.

It usually proceeds without issue, but occasionally does not quite complete. the usual work-around is to restart your Mac and try again.

If you have third-party malware detectors in place, or cleaners, optimizers, speeder-uppers, app removers, or a VPN you installed yourself, they are NOTORIOUS for interfering with file transfers, downloads, and trouble-free installs. "Best Practice' is to remove those items entirely, using the software-maker's un-installer, and NEVER re-Install.

Post back if you wish to discuss further.

Hi, omancini, I have that exact model of iPhone ( actually it’s a 13 pro max) and it has iOS 17.2 on it and it works fine… I’d suspect the problem is High Sierra and not your iPhone.. so, upgrade your MacPro to something newer… you’d also have to get that eero mesh up and going… try doing a soft reset on your iPhone… then using a lightning to usb cable, plug it into your Mac then go for Software update… wifi should be available, make sure it’s turned on, on your Mac + iPhone , and that you have picked a network… usually newer updates to iOS 17 only happen if you’re on the Beta Software channel… ohhh… network problem …💡💡in that case on your Mac , make your Ethernet the default network, check in system prefs>> network… then plug your iPhone into your Mac and do a software update from that… see this Link: iPhone 13 Pro - Technical Specifications (CA)

Apple Sez U need El Capitan, Mojave or better to make it happen… this is from Apple : How to download and install macOS - Apple Support (CA)

Peep this above link which has links to El Capitan and Mojave installers ( and more others, too) .. it’s Apple-riffic !!!

Use Safari for downloading preferentially as the links will open in the App Store… Firefox, etc will work, but you have to point ‘em to open the link(s) in the App

Store…

Good morning, thanks for the time you invested with your reply, simple answer is did not work. Since the problem appeared, more than two months ago, the computer was turned on and off dozens of times, so we can rule out that the restart would fix the issue. I paid attention to the filters that may interfere with the process and this is what I did:

  1. I have an eero mesh after the BGW320-500 Fiber CPE that AT&T installed. I removed the eero network from the picture and connected the LAN from my mac to an available port at the Fiber terminal. No changes, the issue remained.
  2. Logged into the AT&T CPE with the admin password and disabled the firewall and all the filters the device has available. No changes in the behavior.
  3. Using a Netgear LB2120 with an AT&T SIM I connected the Mac to the LAN port available. The Netgear would connect to Internet using the cellular network so the current network wouldn't be used and with that any potential issue with my local network would add. Internet was working normal at a reasonable speed rate and no navigation issues but the problem remained.
  4. Please note that before performing any of the steps mentioned above I checked for any filter or restriction on the network settings in the Mac, could not identify any. For the sake of my mental health the 802.1x authentication was disabled, but still did not work so I activated it back.

To avoid any confusion I confirmed that the WAN IP Networks were different on step 3. for the fiber I got 45.17.199.130, on the wireless network 107.77.234.185.

Again, thanks for your kind response. I am still scratching my head because cannot imagine what kind of connection would the mac need to download and install a patch that shouldn't be bigger that 200Kb.

Have a great day.
