I'm trying to erase everything but the operating system on an old Mac OS X Version 10.6.8
In the disk utility it will not allow me to format Mac HD??? The options are there but not clickable. The only option it gives is to erase free space. I want to factory restore this. Any ideas?

If I remember correctly, Recovery started with 2011 Macs. Snow Leopard was released in 2006.
You can't erase a drive from which you started up the Mac. You have to use Recovery, but I can't remember if that was available on Snow Leopard.
I think you need to boot from an installer DVD.
ok I'll try looking for old boot dvd. I guess the older Mac's don't have that built in? Thanks.
THANKS SO MUCH! I found the install disc way in the bottom of my Apple stuff... computer is SLOWLY reinstalling OS after erasing. It will be great for the kids to use!
