iphone trade-in value revised
In October 2023, I ordered a new iPhone 13 from Apple's website and used the trade-in feature. The website estimated my old iPhone 8's value at $70. After sending in my old iPhone 8, I received an email saying that the trade-in value had been revised from $70 to $15 because "Reason: Camera not functional". My camera was totally functional. My entire iPhone was in perfect condition.
I called 1-800-MY-APPLE to complain but there was no recourse. Either I accept the revised offer, which means I tacitly agree with the "Camera not functional" assessment, or I reject it and they send my iPhone back to me. I have read other postings here, Reddit, etc. with the same complaints: Customers mailed in devices that were working and then were told a camera or a display had "spots" and thus the significantly reduced trade-in value. At that point, your hardware is held hostage.
I believe the vendor doing the trade-in intake and "testing" is defrauding customers -- and Apple -- with a system of faking problems to arbitrage these used devices. You offer me $70, then tell me it's $15, and I'm not going to bother getting my device back, but you've got a perfectly working device that you can turn into more money. If you think about this, it's a great scam.
I am not going to accept my revised offer and will get my device back (I hope).
Any other suggestions for bringing this to Apple's attention in a way that they'll notice?
