iMac Desktop running Mac OS Big Sur 11.7.4 will not update

hello, I could use some help please. I have a desktop Mac (iMac 15,1) running Big Sur version 11.7.4 operating system. I have tried numerous times to update the software to implement the security fixes but all that happens is the wheel keeps spinning. I have tried using the Disk Utility and have restarted the computer – I’ve done this several times with different attempts. Can anyone please give me a suggestion. Since updates are available I’ve got to imagine that the software is not beyond Support!

I understand Software Update is "Checking for updates..." with no end in sight. This is a known bug.

Several workarounds have been proposed, such as restarting your Mac in "Safe Mode" and checking for updates while in that mode, and / or resetting NVRAM. Try both.
