Sonoma broke my photo library completely. I even deleted and created a new system library and it still completely busted

It began after an import from my camera. I went to delete a photo and it gave me a loading progress bar that lasted 20 seconds or so.. to delete one photo. Then I tried another. Froze. So I restarted the app. Gave me the "Restoring" loading screen but that only lasted about 10 seconds.

So I went for it again and tried to delete another photo. Same thing. Restarted. Same thing. Restarted my computer. This time when opening photos it said "Repairing 0%" and it hung there for about 10 minutes before it crashed. Tried repairing the library multiple times. This went on for about 4 days until I decided to try updating to macOS 14.1 to see if that fixed it. It did not.

So I ended deleting it completely. Then I created a new library, made it the system library and set it up. It's been a week and it has not synced one photo. It just says "Syncing 145,043 items from iCloud"

Tried repairing the new library. Tried deleting it and creating yet another system library. Still nothing. No syncing.

edit: the post is tagged as "macOS 10.15" this is incorrect. I'm using Sonoma on a brand new 16" m1 pro

MacBook Pro 15″

Hello destroyer2012,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

Let's boot up in safe mode and attempt to repair your library:

"Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar."

Additional details can be found here: Start up your Mac in safe mode

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? Do you currently have a Time Machine backup?

Cheers!
