I'd like to switch the window layout style from 'classic' to 'cinema.' However, after closing and opening a new window, the layout reverts back to 'classic.' It's quite frustrating. Is this the default behavior, or is it a bug?

There does not seem to be a preference for this in Motion->Settings...
There might be a hidden preference that could be set using the defaults command in Terminal, but I am not aware of it.
In the meantime, you can use Control-Option-U to quickly change the layout.
You need only do it for new projects, existing ones appear to retain the window layout, even after quitting and restarting Motion.
Ok - sorry about that. I took a guess and it didn't pan out (I never use Cinema mode... so I don't know any better!)
This is something that Motion should remember...
About the only thing you can do at this point is Provide Motion Feedback... and use the keyboard shortcut in the meantime.
Have you tried setting up Cinema mode then Quit and Keep Windows (Command-Option-Q)? Afterwards, Motion should open in Cinema mode.
It only works for restarting Motion, but afterward, when you close a window with a cinema layout, every new one opens with a classic layout.
Apple Motion doesn't keep the 'cinema' window layout mode as the preferred choice.
