Optimised Battery Charging stopped working on MacOS Sonoma

Optimised Charging stopped working the moment I upgraded to Sonoma. I mainly use my MacBook in a docked environment daily for work. It quickly picked up my routine and kept the battery at 80% at all times. I rarely use it undocked and it is not charging during evening/night when I'm not working.

I upgraded to Sonoma a couple of weeks ago and just stopped working even though my pattern of working hasn't changed. It keeps the battery at 100% at all times. The settings have the optimisation turned on.

Details:

OS: MacOS Sonoma 14.0 (23A344)

Hardware: 2021 14-inch MacBook Pro, 32 GB RAM, Apple M1 Pro

Battery: Normal Health, 93% capacity

I'd like to avoid reverting to third-party solutions and managing the battery myself.

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 14.0

But it keeps the battery at 100% at all times, it stopped discharging it to 80% as it did before. This is not healthy for the battery and I don't think this is by design. What is the purpose of Optimised Battery Charging if there is literally no difference between it being on, or off?

If you search this community you'll find a common response: 24/7 charging does not harm your battery. The charging circuitry will take care of battery health.

The idea that constant charging is damaging is not applicable to modern Apple batteries with charging means that maintains the battery, i.e. does not charge at full power all the time.

Battery optimization is a selectable option. We leave our 2020 and 2016 MBPs on charge 24/7 ... that's our choice.

You have to read the literature and decide what you want to do with your property. Like I said, search this community on 24/7 charging.

If you think Apple's design for battery charging and maintenance is not a good thing, then I suggest you contact Apple and suggest a better system. We are not Apple, cannot speak for Apple and cannot intervene for you with Apple.

I'll do my research, but just visually there was definitely a change. Before the upgrade it kept the battery visually at 80% charge and there was a notice why. Not it's always at 100% and no notice about anything applied to charging. Which leads me to believe it doesn't work.

I also tried disabling the option until the next day, this brought back optimized charging the following day but then eventually it started charging past 80% again, I think they will probably sort it out with an update

Once the charging circuitry learns your charging habits, it takes charging to 100%. That's normal and by design.
