Unable to login to MacBook Pro or reset password

I updated to the newest OS last week. Yesterday was first time using the device. Password was unrecognized. Unable to login, unable to get past activation lock, entering my Apple ID (which I had to change during this process) has resulted in a never-ending buffering status.

For your changed Apple ID, are you able to sign into iCloud?
