Hello

It looks like you joined the Apple Support Communities from the following page: About the security content of iOS 16.7.1 and iPadOS 16.7.1 - Apple Support. That page does have some good information, but if you are trying to update, it does look like your iPhone XR will want to be updated to the latest version on iOS 17. You can confirm the compatibility here: iPhone models compatible with iOS 17 - Apple Support.

Next, check out this link to learn more about what to do if your iPhone cannot update the software: If your iPhone or iPad won't update - Apple Support. Since it is failing, you may want to follow the steps under the section labeled "Remove and download the update again."

Remove and download the update again
If you still can't install the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, try downloading the update again:
1. Go to Settings > General > [Device name] Storage.
2. Find the update in the list of apps.
3. Tap the update, then tap Delete Update.
4. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the latest update.

If you don't see the update in the list of apps or if the issue happens again, you need to update your device with your computer:
* Update your device using a Mac with macOS Catalina or later
* Update your device using a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, or a Windows PC

Learn how to use recovery mode if your computer doesn't recognize your device or your screen is stuck on the Apple logo for several minutes without a progress bar.

Kind regards!
