Dropped Frames on 4K60 ProRes Log Footage iPhone 15 Pro Longer Recording Sessions
Getting around 10 to 30 fps where I should be getting 60 fps on longer recordings. Please watch this time stamp on my Youtube video for a prime example: 16:11.
I think the issue is my Crucial X6, a card that appeared on the surface to handle 4K60 effectively, but after taking it on longer shoots and trying to move hundreds of GB of files, I noticed significant throttling. I'm assuming the throttling is why I got the lowered frame rate as the ssd heat up.
My first thought was to upgrade to a thunderbolt 4 drive because logically, you think that would work on an Apple device. Turns out thunderbolt 4 drives draw too much power from iPhone 15's and the iPhone will immediately present a "thunderbolt accessory not supported" message. Made absolutely no logical sense that a thunderbolt accessory wouldn't work on an Apple device, but it's on segregated to iPhones and apparently iPad Pro models work fine. Digging further, iPhone 15 Pro models don't have the required thunderbolt controller that allows them to connect to thunderbolt accessories. "iPhone 16 feature likely". Which sucks. So now I'm limbo, wondering what drives are too weak and what drives require too much of the iPhone 15 to work effectively on these longer shoots.
I know the black magic app exists, and they offer log recording more compressed codecs. Wondering why we don't have the same options in the Camera or settings app. I believe the base codec for Log footage demands too much of most SSDs on the market.
I went on a bit of a tangent, but I feel it's important to see my whole journey to this point. The main question I wanna ask is:
Has anyone else experienced this issue with SSDs throttling during long shoots and causing dropped frames for 20+ minute long recordings and what is your fix?
iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 17
