Watch no longer unlocks Mac Studio after Sonoma update

After installing Sonoma on my M1 Mac Studio, my 8th gen watch no longer unlocks the computer. I also have a Mac Studio display and iPhone 11 Pro. All of my devices are running the most up to date software. I contacted Apple Support and they told me they are unaware of this issue. I tried all the troubleshooting described in the Apple Documents.

  1. Turn unlock with watch off in settings, reboot, turn it back on. I did this multiple times rebooting my watch and iPhone sometimes.
  2. turned airplane mode on and off.
  3. Disconnected all bluetooth devices from my Mac, turned bluetooth off, turned it back on.
  4. Unpaired my watch from my phone, re- paired it.

Nothing worked. My expensive watch seems to have lost this functionality in Sonoma, is anyone else experiencing this problem or am I a voice in the wilderness as Apple support claims?

Hi JJB20,

You've tried some great troubleshooting steps so far. You can isolate the issue further by testing it in a new administrator account. This will tell you if the issue is specific to one user account. If needed, this article will guide you through creating a new account: Add a user or group on Mac.

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Users & Groups  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose Administrator.
4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.

If the issue persists in a new user account, reach out to Apple Support directly so they can continue looking into this with you. They can be contacted here: Get Support or by calling the most applicable phone number from this list: Contact Apple for support and service.

Regards.

Mac Studio is based on Mac Mini in many aspects. It's known issue throughout many generations of Mac Mini to radomly diconnect bluetooth devices incl. Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse. Particularly if there is external USB device attached like SSD or HDD. Had Mini Intel some years ago and returned because of that, had Mini M1 later and the same. Now Mac Studio M1 is much better in that aspect but still sometimes disconnects keyboard and mouse and Watch unlock sometimes works, sometimes doesn't work. Afraid can do nothing about this. Apple doesn't seem to care as they didn't solve this for so many years already. Please search for Mac Mini keyboard mouse blutooth issues.
