Upgrade: MacBookPro 13inch Mid2012 - 8gb Memory to 16 or Higher and Storage 1tb from 240SSD

I would like to upgrade my MacBook pro (mid-2012) memory (8GB DDR3 to 16GB or more) and storage 240 GB SSD to 1 TB SSD and install a new OS, At the moment Catalina 10.15.7 is running on my laptop. Kindly share your insights on whether it is possible for me to upgrade the memory and storage and install the latest OS.

Much appreciated your help.

Yes, you can upgrade that model. Just keep in mind that 1) 16GB is the max RAM it supports and 2) Catalina 10.15.7 is the final version of macOS that the machine can run.

I still use a mid-2012 15" i7 MBP and it runs like a champ. I have no reason to spend $2,000 or more to replace it For me there isn't anything compelling that would cause me to spend that much money to get a new "current generation" MBP at this point. Upgrading your MBP should cost only about $100-$150.

One suggestion ... put your new SSD in a decent external enclosure, connect it to your MBP and either install a fresh copy of Catalina on it or use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your existing internal HDD to it. After making sure that your MBP can boot & run from the external, then swap the new SSD into the MBP.

Welcome!

I still use an upgraded Mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13 (8GB RAM and SATA 6G SSD). I am very familiar with the performance characteristics of upgrades in that Mac model.

I doubt adding RAM will have any affect. The fact that you already have an SSD, and assuming the SSD is rated ar SATA 6G, means your Macbook Pro is as fast as it is going to ever be. Mine never shows being starved for RAM with its 8GB.

If you really need more storage and expect to get 2-3 more years of use from the computer (not 10% realistic based on Apple and sftare develepr;s current attitude) then a larger SSD makes sense/

If you want to do the upgrades because of a performance or stability issue, please post the detsils. There are some issues in upgraded MBPs of that model that can be easily overcome. without adding anything of leavig the house.

Thank you, Martin, for your insightful reply. Much appreciated. Yes, you are right, Catalina is 10.15.7 is the final version of MacOS for this machine and the RAM upgrade is only up to 16GB (this was reiterated by a friend of mine). My question is, can I have 1 TB SSD or more storage on this current MBP?

Thanks for the suggestion for using carbon copy cloner.

Yes, 1TB should be no problem. For that matter, larger SSDs should also work fine; but IMHO 1TB is about as far as I'd go with an internal drive - for additional storage I would use external drives. This is for risk management, not technical reasons. And CCC is a great utility; I use it all the time for clones & automated daily data backups.
