Loss of External Speaker Volume Control with External Keyboard

I have an external speaker that is plugged into my 2018 MacBook Pro via an aux cable. I also have the Logitech MX Keys as my external keyboard. I have been able to control the volume of my external speaker with the volume keys on my keyboard for years without issue. I updated to Sonoma 14.0 last week, but within the last 1-2 days I lost the ability to control the volume of the speaker with my Logitech keyboard. I can mute, but up or down yields the Ø symbol. It recognizes what I want to do, but says "no." I have not changed any settings, nor did I find one that seems to be on point for this. The speaker appears normally in the menu bar, but the volume adjustment is "greyed out."

Any suggestions?

Hey Anonymous5781,

The behavior you're describing is consistent with a device that can't have the volume adjusted by macOS.

Make sure the speakers are selected correctly in the Sound Output settings:

Change Sound settings on Mac

Let us know if that helps you get this working correctly.

It might be necessary to reset the SMC in case the sound systems aren't functioning as expected:

Reset the SMC of your Mac
