What lead do i need to connect a second monitor to imac late 2012, 27 inch.

What lead do i need to connect a second monitor to imac late 2012, 27 inch?
I have a 2nd monitor with a HDMI connection on it, do I need a thunderbolt to HDMI cable?
I bought a USB to HDMI cable and that did not work.
