Unable to Save Files

I'm working on a 2020 MBP (Intel) , Sonoma 14.0 OS

What's happening is that I go to save a document in Word for Mac through "Save As" on the File menu. I get a dialog box with the last file name in the file name field. However, I cannot scroll through the directory at hand to pick another name or make sure I am using the same naming convention. It is greyed out. I can go to the file name field at the top of the dialog box, but it will not let me delete the entire file name. I have to click on the name and delete characters and replace them with others. Then, when I go to save with Command Save, I cannot save. I have to press "Save" on the MacBook Pro Touch Bar at the top of the keyboard.

Separate from this, I sometimes have difficulty getting the MacBook Pro keyboard to translate to letters or numbers on the screen. It is as though the keyboard needs to warm up or something. After typing spaces into the authentication or password field for awhile, the spaces finally show up and I can delete them and type in my password.

Any idea with this constellation of symptoms what is going on?

Thanks,

Carol Mattick

Hello cbmattick,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with saving Word files and your keyboard lagging. Are there any updates for Microsoft Word in the App Store? If so, we recommend you install it: How to manually update apps on your Apple device - Apple Support

If not, we recommend reaching out to Microsoft for support with resolving this issue.

As for your keyboard, try the steps here to see if they resolve the issue: If your Mac doesn’t respond to key presses - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hi, I'm having the same issue. Imac 5K 27inch 2019 with Sonoma 14.1.2 and Word latest version 16.79.2.

The problem is that the same issue is present in Google Chrome  120.0.6099.109 on the same machine when I activate the "Save as" function from Gmail... curiously enough not if I try to do the same with Gmail on Safari or Firefox. With Chrome the only solution is unticking the option by which the browser asks every time where to save.

It seems to me something has changed in the way the File System talks with some applications and, as a 20 years+ Apple Customer, currently owning 6 high-end Macs, I am deeply concerned that Apple is not trying to resolve the issue with a system update... the impact of this is so devastating I have to limit business tasks to the Ventura macs I own. Microsoft and Google are not tiny vendors that Apple doesn't consult when releasing a new version so everything should be ok with their software before release. I would also like to add that the version of Safari which was shipped with Sonoma had the exact same issue on my system and then some update seems to have solved it for Safari, but not for Chrome and Word. I never had these kind of issues with a new macOS release since the times of Leopard! Thank you. Eugenio
