More than one device, more than one backup methodology.

If your MBP is an Intel Mac and it's a work/production machine and you have a number of 3rd party apps that are critical I would do the following before upgrading to a new system:
1 - get an external SSD.
2 - clone your boot drive to it with Carbon Copy Cloner.
3 - boot and run from the external SSD.
4 - once you're sure it works like your internal boot drive upgrade to Sonoma.
5 - test your critical apps to verify they are 100% compatible with Sonoma.
6 - finally, upgrade your internal boot drive to Sonoma.
Even though I'm retired and my Mac is not a production/work Mac I follow those steps for each new system upgrade.
Just some food for thought.
I'm seeing a lot of problems people have experienced after upgrading to Sonoma. (That in itself does not mean that Sonoma is a bad OS.) Some people choose to wait for a while before upgrading, until problems have been identified and addressed. If you are worried, you might consider doing that.
