Does Apple Watch use data from speed sensor for the Outdoor Cycle activity?

The watchOS 10 update made it possible to connect speed sensors to the Apple Watch, but when recording an “outdoor cycle” activity it does not seem to be utilizing the data from the speed sensor to calculate speed and distance. Can someone please confirm or deny this is the case?

I bought a Garmin Speed Sensor 2 because my mountain bike rides are always shorted on mileage since the GPS isn’t accurate enough to pick up all the turns on the trails I ride (often under a canopy of trees since the trails are in a forest). It appears the speed sensor data is not used though, because my mileage is still the same as before pairing the speed sensor.

I did confirm the sensor is working for the “indoor cycle” activity, but that the reason I bought it in the first place was to make the “outdoor cycle” activity more accurate.

Very disappointed, as I was initially super excited that my Apple Watch would finally be able to accurately record my mountain bike rides!

I have the same problem with my garmin speedsensor2 and Watch9 and iphone as display unit.. It pairs perfectly but it not pulls the data from the device. If i pair it via ant+ and my garmin forerunner all speed data is pulled from the device.

This problem is not with my Stages Power/cadence sensor. Is there any advice in the meantime?

Hey there sjv7883,

While you may need to contact Apple Support about this, we'd like to help by ruling out some basics, along with learning more about what's happening:

  1. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone and Restart Apple Watch
  2. You mentioned having watchOS 10 installed, but the latest version is watchOS 10.0.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to update: Update your Apple Watch If you have a compatible iPhone model, the latest version is iOS 17.0.2. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update your iPhone or iPad
  3. As this is a third-party accessory, and it still works for indoor cycling workouts, have you reached out to Garmin about this?

Cheers!

No, not yet.

I had assumed it was a bug as there’s no reason I can think of to use GPS instead of the speed sensor if one is connected. However, a couple of software updates later nothing has changed.

As MTNS2C suggests, I’ve submitted a feature request. If anyone else who wants to see this fixed/added could do the same that would be really helpful.

I’ve been having the same issue with my Coospo speed sensor since I got it a couple of weeks ago. It’s connected, been recognised as a speed sensor and the wheel size has been entered. However, Outdoor Cycle is still pulling GPS data for speed.

No Cycling Speed data is recorded to Health either. If I look at Health, it says there are no data sources for Cycling Speed. However, it shows my Apple Watch as a source for Cycling Cadence as I have a sensor connected for that too.

There seems to be nothing wrong with the sensor. It connects to my Watch fine and is recognised as a speed sensor. If I change it to its cadence mode, it records cadence fine. I’ve even tried swapping it with my cadence sensor (switched to its speed setting) and that one didn’t record speed either.

To begin with, I thought it would calibrate if I went on a longish ride with it, but still after 25km of straights with very little stopping, it’s not working. My feeling at this point is that there is some software issue with the Watch.
