Transferring to a New Mac:

Note to always have a backup of your current Mac prior to getting a new one. So, create the Time Machine Backup so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong from here.. You can also use of Migration Assistant to transfer files over to the new Mac from the Time Machine Backup.

  • Use of Migration Assistant:

Use Migration Assistant to transfer files from your Time Machine backup.

Go Here: Move your Content to a new Mac - Apple Support

  • Use of iCloud:

If need be, you can enable things like Photos in your iCloud settings, and access them that way. Note that you have 5GB free storage, so to get more, you'd have to cancel the subscription if, and when, desired. But, use the migration assist, to avoid having to pay for iCloud storage. Go Here: iCloud Storage Plans and Pricing - Apple Support

Notes...

  • Recent Mac mini is 64-Bit Only:

Without getting too technical, 64-bit only means that former applications may not work, if they are 32-bit. So, contact the developer, if you need to get at 64-bitinstaller.

  • Prior to Ridding of your Mac:

Important: Be certain you follow as instructed here, when looking to rid of your MacWhat to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade in your Mac - Apple Support.

If you're referring to Migration Assistant, you need to launch the Migration Assistant app on the Mac you're transferring FROM (Applications-->Utilities). Once it launches you should get to a screen that asks what you want it to do. In this case, select transfer to new Mac.

All the above is assuming you've got the two Macs connected properly with either a Thunderbolt cable or ethernet crossover cable, of course.

If you've got a Time Machine backup external drive connected to your new Mac, select From Time Machine backup.

If you have both old and new Macs connected to the same WiFi network, it should see the old Mac...if it doesn't, check that your old Mac is connected to WiFi. (I personally don't recommend this method, but others here swear by it).

Hope this helps.
