Playing Music Saved on Watch

Prior to WatchOS 10, it was easy to shuffle music saved on the watch. You simply opened the Now Playing app in the watch, tapped the watch, then hit play. If something was already in the queue, you just force quit that or Podcasts/Music apps, then reopen it, and hit play on the empty queue. It would automatically start a shuffled playback of all music saved into the watch (through the Watch app on the phone). This worked in every WatchOS going back many years.

Now, with WatchOS 10.0.1, this doesn't work. I still have the same music saved on the watch, but pressing play in the watch pane for Now Playing does nothing 9 out of 10 times. Every so often, it starts playing as it did before, but playback stops after a few minutes (playing to AirPods) and the queue is erased. If you tap the AirPods to resume playback, it plays from...somewhere. I seems to be streaming my full music library, not playing locally, or from what's stored in the watch. The Music app in the watch only shows the Apple Music interface and my Music library in iCloud. I cannot find the set of what's deliberately saved in the watch.

All I want to do is play the music stored in my watch, all shuffled, in a couple taps, without it stopping randomly. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hey there umparrothead,

It sounds like you figured out how to use the Now Playing screen on your watch, but when pressing play, it sometimes doesn't respond. If that's right, we'd like to learn more about what's happening, along with ruling out some basics:

  1. Are you still able to access the songs you saved to your Apple Watch using the steps under the section 'Play music' here? Check out: Play music on Apple Watch
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone and Restart Apple Watch
  3. If you're pairing with a compatible iPhone model, the latest version is iOS 17.0.2. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update your iPhone or iPad

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply.

  1. Yes...and no. They appear, but not all that are downloaded have the icon (arrow on bottom right). Also, playing what's saved on watch will stop on its own after a couple minutes. "Shuffle" as a voice command pulls only from my library, not any added Apple Music playlists, and that's streamed, not played locally. Finally, I want to shuffle all music saved on watch, not just play a single playlist. This has been simple since the S2. The "press play icon on Now Playing app under Apple Watch" worked in the past. It doesn't anymore.
  2. They've both been restarted. No change.
  3. They're both running the latest non-beta version available.
