Unable to connect Macbook Air to Internet via LAN (Ethernet) cable

I have an Ethernet adapter because my Macbook Air doesn't have an Ethernet port. But I was still unable to connect. My Mac didn't recognize the Ethernet connection. Support files say click on "add a service" then select "EThernet", but there is no such option in my dropdown list, only Thunderbolt Bridge, Wifi, PPPoE, 6to4.

Help please.

Restart and retest. If that fails, restart in safe mode, wait five minutes, restart normally and retest.

Done. Still no “Ethernet” in “Add service” pull down menu, only Thunderbolt Bridge.

Does the Ethernet need to be plugged in to my Macbook Air (Ventura) when I retest? I have the LAN-C connector but not a LAN cable. Need to go into the office for that.
