IMovie needs macOS 13.4? Big Sur is 11.7 Help?

I love my late 2013 MacBook Pro-11.7 is as far as I go. Now, I'm out Mac's apps?

I can't open any iMovie projects-or even iMovie, obviously. Before I decided that Catalina needed an upgrade, I investigated my issues with Logic Pro. I did NOT investigate IMovie. Why should I? And Garage Band? It's gone, too? What have I done.

When things like this happen, I sigh to my days of PC use and all the work that went into it. This doesn't feel like 'apple is so easy' at all.

So, I've got my IMovie projects in my computer, all in 'white' and I can't even open them. I need to use them and open them, so fun. I need super brains to help with this.

Reading 'Rich', the main responder on this topic; I can not move iMovie to the Trash, when I attempt to 'open' it as per 2015, it won't allow me to, per the screen shot. I can click that blue button a hundred times and go nowhere.

When support said your MacBook Pro late 2013 was not compatible with Big Sur 11.7. 10 did you tell them that it is on your Mac?

The Apple site says that MacBook Pro late 2013 is compatible with Big Sur

Mac Hardware Requirements

For details about your Mac model, click the Apple icon at the top left of your screen and choose About This Mac. These Mac models are compatible with macOS Big Sur:

  • MacBook (2015 or later)
  • MacBook Air (2013 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (Late 2013 or later)
  • Mac mini (2014 or later)
  • iMac (2014 or later)
  • iMac Pro (2017 or later)
  • Mac Pro (2013 or later)

So, are you saying that when you sign in to the app store and open the purchases folder in your account, that you cannot update iMovie from there? Can you post a screen shot of your purchases folder? It should look something like the screen shot below. The little cloud symbols indicate the apps that can be downloaded/upgraded.

Yup. It won't update and my previous screen shot is of the small window that continues to open every time I press the 'open' button on iMovie. The box, "In order to use iMovie..." blah blah...Oh. AND Garage band won't open either. With that, I get 'you don't have permission, you need an administrator'. That's fun.

Now, I'm searching my house for a cord to to use 'My passport for Mac' external HD since this is such a pain in the ***.

Ok. So moved it to trash. It looks like this and all my movies, too..in the screen shot. Are you saying that I will not be able to get any version at all with Big Sur?? Who on earth was I reading when they said, 'Yes, it's great to upgrade to Big Sur. No problems at all.' This is why the internet is such a **** show...

I miss Seattle. There I had such great Mac hackers that could keep my machine clean and running no matter the year...

So, really what you are saying, I can do nothing but go back to Catalina. Just need a confirm. Because, Garage band also doesn't work...Which is why I upgraded in the first place; Garage band worked well in Catalina, Logic Pro had too many glitches...I'm sorry, but I believe a good company should allow us to keep our OG machines working to the best of their abilities. I'm just surprised somehow, I didn't know about all this Big Sur yuck before I idiotically upgraded.

Did you also drag iMovie Library and iMovie Theatre to the trash today or at some time previously ?

Only the iMovie Application should be moved to trash unless you moved the others to trash for some other reason in the past.

Go to your Account Purchases as you did before and now that iMovie is in the trash you should see something other than OPEN, such as download or similar. What does it say now in place of OPEN.

If so download and you should be offered a compatible version for Big Sur.

Hi,

To movie the iMovie app to the trash, drag it from the Applications folder into the trash.

Try this procedure to get Catalina, the highest operating system that your 2013 MacBook Pro can run:

To update/redownload iMovie 10, drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the trash. (You can skip that step if you had iMovie 10 on your computer before, but deleted it.) Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar. (NOTE: For El Capitan and older, click on the Purchases tab at the top of the app store screen and then sign in. Click on Purchases again to reveal your purchases.)  You will see your purchases displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from there. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash (if you moved it there) and return it to the Applications folder.

First, my late 2013 'can' run Big Sur and that is what I have, now. I do not have Catalina any more.

And I've read this response so many times...this does not work. Which is why I've included the the screen pic. App Store does not allow me to do anything with iMovie 10-move it or put it anywhere or try to get it again-It won't leave my dock, either.

The picture is me trying to 'repurchase' or whatever...not happening.

Hi,

Well, I don't think it's actually 'in' the trash. It's all so confusing. But, I think the reason 'Rich' isn't responding, is he's waiting for me to find the truth.

I went on a few macforums to find if my Late 2013 could be upgraded to Big Sur, there I found multiple lists of the various MacBooks of various years and what could and couldn't upgrade. I found that mine could.

But, I called support today, they said no. It can not. Now, here's the conundrum with using the internet for info. It's often false.

Thus, I'm going to make sure everything is backed up then see if I can figure out how to downgrade. So much fun, my own fault. So, thanks for helping, but I'm going a different route altogether, now. Any thoughts on how to do this downgrade? That would be incredible...

I may hit my local shop to do the final work.

If it was not compatible then you would not have been able to upgrade if you upgraded from an Apple site.

Go to trash and see if iMovie is in the trash. Is it in there or not?

Go to your Applications folder and see if you have iMovie in there, look carefully!

When you tried to put iMovie in the trash you did not come back with the questions I asked about warnings or pop-up menus. Did you get any?
