iPhone will only record in mono from external microphone(s)

This needs to be explained somewhere prominent because existing threads don't make this clear and it took me too long to work this out.

The iPhone audio inputs (TRRS format), including how lightning cables handle audio by default only include a single mono channel. This means even if you have two microphones mapped to stereo coming in, by the time it reaches the iphone it will have been re-mapped to that standard (i.e. either merged into mono, or more likely, one of the channels dropped entirely).

The only workaround is some external devices that send the audio over lightning in their own way (I assume just as data streams), then some apps can decode that. Which is why this OP may have had success using the Blue Yeti stereo mic with Filmic Pro. Or why you can record 2 tracks using an iRig Pro DUO and their proprietary app.

Tested with iPhone 14. I hope this helps someone.

Did you have any luck?

I'm trying to use a new Rode Videomicro II with an iPhone 15 Pro starting on iOS17. I'm using the Apple USB-C headset adapter with the supplied Rode TRS to TRRS adapter, and it is only recording Mono - in every camera or audio app I have. After talking with Apple for an hour with no progress, and searching far and wide on the web, this is the first thread that has given me a hint, especially if you say it changed when you upgraded to iOS17.

If anyone has any solutions - let me know please.

PS The best solution I have found to this personally is to use the Rode AI-Micro to take the input from my two microphones into the iPhone using the supplied USB-to-lightning cable. However, even then, only some iOS apps will recognise the stereo input (such as Filmic Pro, or the Rode Capture app). The good news is, the default Apple Camera app *does* recognise the stereo input from AI-Micro.

I own a binaural recording headset that I’ve always used without issue. It’s connecting via a USBC to lightning adaptor. I’ve reviewed the stereo mic without issues on my iPhone 13. However, as of IOS17, it seems to suddenly capture mono only. Very odd. I may try something other than voice memos, which used to work fine! I’ll try shooting video with it and report back. Weird.
