Finder search not showing iCloud documents

Hi. I have a new MacBook Air 15. I have signed in to iCloud, and I can see all my documents saved on iCloud fine. Except when I do a word search on Finder to locate a specific file, the whole iCloud folder shows empty. I have tried 'indexing' the folder on Spotlight with no luck. Any ideas? Thank you.

Thanks for your answer. I have sold my issue. It turns out indexing in the spotlight privacy box was the right solution, but I needed to re-index the entire Macintosh disk rather than just my iCloud folder.

This is a very simple solution to a big problem, and I would encourage everyone having problem with Finder searches to try it. I am a bit puzzled as to why I spend a couple of hours with Apple support and they were not able to suggest this fix.

Thanks and good luck.

Hi Alexisxy,

It sounds like you're looking to locate a specific document. If so, based on the notes you mentioned in your post you can use the steps below from the guide here to help check using macOS Mojave. If you can’t find a file on Mac - Apple Support

"On your Mac, do any of the following:

  • Use Spotlight: Click the Spotlight icon  in the menu bar, enter the file’s name in the Spotlight search field, then double-click the file in the search results. See Search with Spotlight on Mac.
  • Ask Siri: Click the Siri icon  near the right end of the menu bar, ask Siri to find your file, then double-click the file in the search results.
  • View in Finder: Click the Finder icon  in the Dock, click Recents in the Finder sidebar, then choose View > Group By > Date Last Opened.

A blue arrow pointing to the Finder icon at the left side of the Dock.

  • View the Recent Items list: Choose Apple menu  > Recent Items, then choose the file from the list (if it appears there).
  • In some apps, you can choose File > Open Recent (or something similar) to see a list of recently viewed files. Some apps may show a list of recent files at the bottom of the File menu instead."

Thank you! this is helpful! I have been looking an answer / fix to this annoying issue. I bought another Mac, a MacBook Air M3 that I always carry around at work. With the MacBook Pro I could easily breeze through the files with a simple search button but with MacBook Air, I found that I could not search anything except on Macbook Air itself. I even thought of just resorting to carrying my MacBook Pro with me instead of MacBook Air but I found with portability-wise, MacBook Airs are the best with the workflow I have. I just could not find the answer to the problem.

I tried almost everything, reset, hard reset, created another user (as I found in one of the suggestions), etc. etc. Then I found this and watched the video and it worked!!

Thanks for this. :)
