My iMac runs on OS Catalina 10.15.7. 3.1GHZ Quad-Core Intel Core i5. It has 8gb DDR3 memory. I could't update anything using the system update. It kept spinning and did nothing. All softwares run very very slow.
My Safari is 15.6.1, looks like I can't update it without a newer OS system?
Wondering what's a safe system update that I can install, so I can continue to use Safari and some word processing program at least.

go to > Identify your iMac model - Apple Support
scroll down the list to your iMac model and check for the Newest compatible operating system.
You iMac must be a Mid 2014 or newer to install a higher macOS version. Look a "About this Mac..." under your Apple menu:
