is there a way to free up storage on MacBook using the cloud

MacBook Pro 2015 only 27.3MB available of 121.12GB. How do I get documents off to the cloud? I've tried store in iCloud, select desktop and documents and photos. I get a message that iCloud photo library is already on. I've tried Optimize Mac Storage in the iCloud under Apple ID but it has not freed up any space?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.6

icloud is a sync service. That means there's a copy on the mac of everything in icloud.

Optimize storage reduces storage used in some cases, by reducing the quality of photos for example, or removing some files that have not been accessed in a while.

This may nor may not result in a lot of space being saved.

In general, if you want to free up storage space on your Mac, the best option is an external drive.
