How does the pre order process exactly works?

First time Apple and it feels like embracing a new religion. I want to do the iPhone pre order but I want to know how the pre ordering process works. I have a few questions.

Do you need to pay now, or when your phone is ready to pick up from the store?
Does it show me a exact date when I can come pick it up? Because I have a upcoming trip end of october! I cannot cancel the trip.
Can I cancel a preorder when the waiting line is too long?

You pay when its ready to ship.
Yes, you will get a date when its available for pickup.
What waiting line? When you pre-order you get the device assigned to you and an estimated date. When you get the date for pickup you just go pick it up. No waiting line for anything, except maybe at the store when you go pick it up, but it should not be more than a few minutes.
