migrating old iMac to new Mac mini
not enough space to transfer files on the Mac mini itself, I do have an external ssd with a usb-c 3.2 port. How can I manage to transfer the dat from my iMac to the new Mac mini

You will then have to be selective. When you use a TM backup of your old Mac when transferring you can leave out some of the categories and selectively transfer some files later. Usually photos/videos take up the most room so could move those to an external drive and transfer some later before using Time machine.
