can't change wifi password, as I now have a different one for my wifi

unable to join as I'm unable to change the previous password

If the password has changed, your phone should ask you automatically to enter the correct password, but if it's not doing that, tap the little circle with an i in it and then either tap the Forget Network. Then add the network back, which will require you to enter the correct password.
