Can I incrementally move folders from win 11. I have tried to do this but it creates a new user name in Ventura for each seperate attempt ( i do not want to hog wifi for hours at a time)

I didn’t suggest Migrating.

I have no idea where to find instructions. It’s just using a drive as you would any other storage device.

Plug a drive into your windows computer, use their disk management software to format it ExFAT, then copy files to the drive.

Eject the drive and plug it into the Mac. Copy the files from the drive into the desired location on your Mac.

Since it is a one-way operation, you could leave the drive formatted NTFS. macOS can read NTFS, but not write to it natively.

A possible solution of several possible solutions would involve and contained in below link from Apple

Strongly suggest reading all elements in that link before attempting.

It will remove all Personal Data and User Account from the computer

It will not Touch the Operating System

Erase your Mac and reset it to factory settings - Apple Support (CA)

Once that is done, if you choose that option, is to start a fresh with a New Installation Like an Out of the Box Experience

Then use Transfer to a new Mac with Migration Assistant the right way

Wi-Fi is not a good choice as it's very slow and prone to problems.

As to migrating the data, why not simply migrate it all the delete all you don't want? Repeatedly moving small pieces seems to me to be counterproductive.

Is there not a time when everyone is sleeping? Start the Migration before going to bed. Should be done by morning.

Back up your Mac with Time Machine

Backup disks you can use with Time Machine

You cannot break up Migration into multiple steps. It’s all or nothing.

You can copy folders individually using an external drive formatted ExFAT.
