13.5.1 update and external monitor doesnt work

After updating to 13.5.1, my external monitor, via HDMI to USB-C docking station, no longer works via my non-Apple dongle/docking station. It is not detected when I plug it in.

EDIT: 2019 MacBook Pro, 16". Ignore the metadata attached to this post since that's for an old laptop apparently.

I have tried:

  • Restarting
  • Unplugging / replugging everything
  • Putting the computer to sleep then waking it
  • Resetting SMC and NVRAM
  • Rebooting into safe mode
  • Using Detect Displays in System Settings
  • Changing the resolutions to many other options, none of which work
  • Deleting ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver...
  • Different cables
  • Different monitors (admittedly both kind of old but both worked before) (only connecting one at a time, not trying multi-monitor)
  • Different USB docking stations
  • I have also tried a different computer, also with 13.5.1, and reproduced the problem.

None of this makes it work.

IT DOES WORK with a Mac branded HDMI->USB C dongle, but it used to work pre-update with my docking station.

Seems very correlated with the upgrade. Pretty sure this is a bug.

Any other ideas? Anyone have luck reporting things to Apple?

I hope it's not super relevant since it did work before the update, but here it goes:

Monitor:

Acer S271HL

If anyone knows hubs w/ a number of USB-A and USB-C inputs and at least one HDMI port w/ a long USB-C out cable that will work with an external monitor and macOS 13.5.1, please let me know!

ordinary USB-C docks.

that should not be an issue, PROVIDED

HDMI cables you want for HDMI-only Displays (higher resolutions than 720p TV sets) are marked as Certified with an anti-counterfeiting tag and are labeled:

"Premium High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "with Ethernet" --OR--

"Ultra High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "48G"

Cables with No Certification tags are good for your standard 720p TV set, and not much more.

HDMI was invented for HD TV sets. it works great at its original resolution of 720i or 720p. At higher resolutions, it quickly develops issues that are complex to solve, and the cables and adapters required to solve are NOT intuitive.

Newer versions of MacOS are more strict about tolerating ANY transmission errors.
